Ohio League

"To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it."
---Mother Teresa

The vision that built the Ohio League continues to guide us to continue to support Ohio children and adults with disabilities and their families through our advocacy and education. Donor gifts help us keep up with the increasing need of our members .

There are many ways to give:

Annual, Honorary and Memorial Gifts

You may make an Annual Gift of any size. Often Annual Gifts are made in memory of a loved one who received services through the Ohio League. You may designate your Annual or Memorial Gift to a specific activity of the League or to the support of all of the League's programs and services.

Planned Giving

You may start now to leave a gift to the future support of the Ohio League. There are several ways to provide a planned gift:

Charitable Gift Annuities

Charitable gift annuities are life income gifts. You transfer assets now and receive a charitable deduction for a portion of the transfer, and you or a beneficiary receives income for the rest of your life, or for a fixed period of time. Both you and the Ohio League can benefit from life income gifts.

The charitable deduction you receive and the rate of guaranteed payment back to you depends upon your age and that of any annuitants you may wish to include. In some cases, you may find that your rate of return is significantly higher than what you may be receiving in other investments.

For more information about charitable gift annuities, contact your lawyer, financial advisor or the Ohio League.

Bequests

The easiest way to include the Ohio League in your estate is to make a bequest in your will. Here is sample language you might want to consider adding to your will:

To Bequeath a Specific Amount: " I give, devise and bequeath to the Ohio League, a nonprofit corporation in Ohio, the sum of $(______) for use in (state the purpose of your bequest or indicate general use)."

To Bequeath A Percentage (Residual): " I give, devise and bequeath to the Ohio League, a nonprofit organization in Ohio, (___%) of my residual estate, both real and personal, for use in (state the purpose of your bequest or indicate general use)."

When you include the Ohio League in your estate plans, please let us know so that we can thank you right away and recognize your special support.

For more information on bequests, contact your lawyer, financial advisor or the Ohio League.

Appreciated Stock

A gift of stock or other appreciated property entitles you to a tax deduction for the market value of the donated stock, not just your cost basis. If the stock you wish to donate has been held for more than one year, you can avoid capital gains tax on any appreciation of the stock by donating the stock prior to sale. The Ohio League benefits by selling the stock without paying taxes on the gain and you benefit from making a contribution that would be larger than you might have been able to donate in cash.

Please notify the Ohio League of your plan to donate a gift of stock so we can assist with appropriate arrangements with your broker or financial advisor.

For more information on gifts of stock or other appreciated property, contact your lawyer or financial advisor or the Ohio League.

Non-Monetary Gifts

The Ohio League also accepts non-monetary gift items.

Fund Raising Events

The Ohio League, like all nonprofits, depends on fund raising events not only to raise much needed resources to support programs and services, but to raise awareness of the League in our communities. You can help by being a part of the fund raising activities. Or you may wish to serve on the Fund Development Committee. Contact the Ohio League for more information about Fund Raising Events and opportunities.

Life Insurance Policies

Whether it is a policy you already have but no longer need, or whether it is a new policy you buy for the specific purpose of making a gift to The Ohio League, a gift of life insurance can be advantageous to both you and the center. By naming the Ohio League as a beneficiary and assigning ownership of the policy to the League, you can get valuable income tax charitable deductions, and this type of gift won't reduce your current income. You can transfer the ownership of an insurance policy to the Ohio League without the legal expense of preparing a will or codicil.

Gifts of Real Estate

Consider deeding your property to the Ohio League now and retaining the use and enjoyment of the property for your lifetime. For this you would receive an immediate charitable deduction, and the value of your home would be removed from your estate.

Planning for the Future

Ohio law makes it very difficult, if not impossible to leave any significant amount of money to your loved one with developmental disabilities. However, you can leave behind a simple promise: the Ohio League will continue to be there to advocate for your loved one long after your death.

This promise can only be fulfilled if OLMR has the financial and personnel resources to accommodate an uncertain future.

There are many ways OLMR can continue to support your loved one:

Through volunteer guardianship--naming another OLMR member or staff person as testamentary guardian in your will. By doing this you insure that the same ideals and values you advocated for your loved one will continue to drive his or her service needs.

Through the continued public policy advocacy of the only organization in Ohio which supports the full continuum of residential service options, including state operated developmental centers, private ICFMR, and community based programs.

You have worked hard to ensure that your loved one with developmental disabilities has all of their needs met. Do not risk losing this assurance after your death. A bequest to OLMR in the name of your loved one with disabilities is a caring and appropriate way to leave part of your legacy to them, without risking their entitlement programs.
